About Myself.

My name is Jarrad Samuel Parker, I was born in November of 1979 and I am based in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. My first love was illustration, and from a very young age I would spend hours on end almost everyday getting lost in the creativity that this medium facilitated. This continued throughout high school and it is there where I also discovered a passion for the creative avenue that photography provided.

After leaving school I still continued with my art but my time with photography revolved around just enjoying taking snapshots of the landscape while out exploring it or when travelling around with good mates while away on surfing trips. In November of 2014 I decided to purchase a DSLR and dedicate more of my time and efforts into getting out there to take photos with the main intention of trying to capture in an image, the feelings these landscapes placed upon me.

The beauty in the way the elements cast their mood upon the landscape, and the way they can help reveal a landscapes character fascinates me. The marks they leave and what they, with the help of the earth beneath our feet, help create dumbfounds me. Trying to get a sense of this into an image is the main drive and focus behind my photography and overall, this is what I try to put forward through my images. I also feel my illustrative background helps drive a fixation for the textures, colours and smaller details that can be found amongst a landscape. I would describe my photography as more of an intimate perspective of the world around me.

The main goals with my photography are quite straight forward. I simply aim to keep the feeling of wonder, anticipation and excitement that stem from getting out there to shoot the landscape at the forefront of my relationship with photography, while keeping the foundations focused on improving my vision and skills at conveying a scene and image making.

Achievements.

I have been proud and fortunate to have my images recognised and featured in various competitions and magazine’s over the years. The highlight of which was winning the 2018 inaugural Merrell Photo Competition, which you can read more about HERE.

In 2021 two of my aerial images were selected to accompany a collection of photographs taken from around the world for a unique set of postcards entitled Coastlines, which was published in New York by Clarkson Potter for Tiny Atlas Quarterly. Following from that they will then also appear in Tiny Atlas’s second book, also entitled Coastlines, due in the Spring of 2022.

In 2020 I was proud to have one of my images place as a finalist in Australian Geographic’s Nature Photographer of the Year, and to also have the image displayed in the South Australian Museum.

I was happy to take out 4th place in the Australian Photography Awards for 2018, and to have my other submission make it into the 75 shortlisted entries. I also made it into 4th place in Capture Magazine’s Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers 2018.

In 2017 I took out the runners up position in Capture Magazine’s Australia’s Top Emerging Photographers competition, and also had another submission place in the final top 10. 2017 also saw me placing 4th in the landscape category of Australian Photography Magazine's Photographer of the year 2017, I was also very pleased to have my other submissions place 6th and 14th in the final top 20. In 2016 I was named runner up for Photographer of the Year in a competition run by the Focus Photographers Group.

I’m very humbled to of featured in Capture Magazine’s The Annual in both 2017 and 2018, and in 2017. I was also very proud and appreciative to have a feature in Capture Magazine's Talent section which you can read more about HERE.
